FAQs

Is it true that people who walk in their sleep are ‘acting out’ their dreams?

No, it's not true. Dreaming takes place during REM sleep. REM sleep is also accompanied by an inhibition of motor neurons which results in a complete paralysis of skeletal muscles. So not only can we not walk during REM – we can't actually move. Sleep walking (or 'somnambulism') takes place in slow-wave (or non-REM) sleep. Sleep walking is a parasomnia, and is common.

Do I have to complete all the steps before getting any benefit from Sleepful?

Each step of Sleepful is designed to improve your sleep quality. In our experience, however, users differ in which steps they find the most helpful. The best approach, then, is to complete all the steps.

IS CBT for insomnia the same as 'sleep hygiene'?

No. CBT for insomnia (or CBT-I) is a systematic treatment approach, based on psychological principles, which focusses on those behaviours and styles of thinking which can perpetuate chronic insomnia. Sleep hygiene, on the other hand, is general health advice on habits to avoid, or habits to adopt in order to protect or improve sleep quality. While most CBT-I programmes will include a 'sleep hygiene' component, they will also (like Sleepful) offer a lot more.
